Smarties Preschool
By age five, every child should understand, speak, read and write basic English. We train caregivers from the community to make that possible — on the corner where families already live.
Key activities
- Recruit confident young community members with strong English as caregivers
- 22-month training programme on the SNN² curriculum, worksheets and moral education
- Accreditation, supervision and management by SNN² for 22 months, plus 11 months observation
- Caregivers assume full business ownership; contribute 10% for ongoing quality monitoring
- Curriculum covers general knowledge, morals, numeracy, and English through worksheets
Children ready for grade R with foundational English, strong morals, and confidence — and young people employed as founders of local preschools.
English Remedial & After-School Tutorials
We rebuild English fundamentals before grade 8 — the point where too many learners quietly fall behind and never recover.
Key activities
- Monday–Thursday after-school tutorials in a distraction-free setting
- One hour of dedicated basic English instruction each day
- One hour of homework review and school-work reinforcement each day
- 50% homework assistance — with new practice work if none has been assigned
Learners in grades 1–7 who understand, speak, read and write English proficiently, and who arrive in grade 8 with the foundation to keep up.
Smarties Home School
For families who need an alternative to the mainstream school system — a nurturing home environment supporting CAPS and IEB curricula, under SNN² supervision.
Key activities
- Daily reception, school devotions and daily addresses
- Curriculum delivery aligned to CAPS and IEB pace-setters
- Sporting activities, outings and extra-curricular development
- Individualised attention to each child's challenges — no more ‘slow learner’ labels
- Parents involved in providing extra work at home

The Smarties model only works because we take caregiver formation seriously — through two phases of selection, training and mentorship.
Prospective applicants
- Completed grade 11 or 12; confident English communicator
- Non-refundable R1000 application fee to SNN²
- SNN² conducts interviews and feasibility studies
- Location scouting (sanitation, security), lease and signage
- Trainees market and register learners within a 3 km radius
Training & capacity building
- English: reading (twice daily), speaking, language, rhymes and poems
- Numeracy: shapes and numbers
- Moral education: greetings, respect for family, community and the Divine
- General knowledge: universe, Earth, South Africa, Africa and beyond
- Ongoing workshops on using SNN² worksheets effectively

At what age can my child join SNN²?
Smarties Preschool welcomes children from two years old. After-school tutoring and Smarties Home School support grades 1 to 7.
Which curriculum does the home school follow?
Smarties Home School supports both the CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) and the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) curricula, taught according to the pace-setters in use in schools.
Who becomes an SNN² caregiver?
Confident young people from the community who have completed grade 11 or 12 and communicate well in English. Applicants pay a non-refundable R1000 fee, are interviewed, and are supported through location selection, training and mentorship.
How long is the caregiver commitment?
22 months of supervised operation followed by 11 months of observation — 33 months in total — after which caregivers take full personal ownership of their preschool. They then contribute 10% of earnings back to SNN² for continuing quality monitoring.
What does the after-school programme cost families?
We keep costs deliberately moderate so that families in disadvantaged communities can access the programme. Please contact us for current fees in your area.
